Phonic 21 : Lego Spelling Test

Assalamualaikum and Hi!

Today, we had some kind of changes in our Spelling Test Day. I intended to bring some fun in spelling test since they tend to be so bored and scared every Thursday. So, I came up with this spelling activity using Lego bricks. Bought this lego bricks (4 sets) through Shopee last year and it was pretty cheap. 

So, first thing first, we watched a video from Supermind (Supermind textbook page 6) and sang here and there. I bought my own portable projector (rechargeable) which is pretty good but it would've been better with darker lighting.

Then, I divided them into groups of 4 (because I have only 4 sets of lego bricks). These groups of course mixed ability (the best one in proficiency will be the leader). Then, I distributed a Lego Spelling Test Worksheet (as follows) :

So, next, I started the spelling test by saying out a word. Pupils spell together. Then, I wrote the words on the whiteboard and they copied on the worksheet. This worksheet is made specifically for three-letters words (see the three rectangle on top of the lego bricks). After that, they formed the letters using the lego bricks (its a competition between the groups just to make it fun).

It really tested their imagination on creating letters using these lego bricks. Plus, I wanna train them to tolerate with their friends and learn to share more in a good way. The good thing is I found that my pretty good students did pretty bad in this activity of shaping letters using lego bricks since they managed to reach the sixth words only, while my other two classes (low proficiency classes) did all eight words with 10 minutes remaining time. Overall, all of them did pretty well in this activity, no fights, no egoistic thing etc. :D

How to do it?

1. Drill the phonemes with actions.
2. Introduce with words associated with phonemes.
3. Placed the picture cards on the wall (around the class).
4. Give pupils this worksheet.
5. Ask pupils to walk around and write down the words based on its pictures.

Phonic 18 : Phonemes /j/ (y), /z/ (z,zz), /kw/ (qu) worksheet

Assalamualaikum and Hi!

As this was another lesson that excites my pupils because it has cut and paste activity, I'd love to share it with you guys. Its a pretty simple worksheet with minimum words to be learnt.

In this lesson, teachers need to :

1. Teach the sounds of the respective phonemes.
2. Drill the words properly and associate it with pictures.
3. Distribute worksheet, explain properly on how to conduct the activity.

I have a pupil who happened to cut the words at the bottom and paste it on the middle words, and I just marked it right though the instruction asked them to write the missing letters. So, kids, you know! Overall, this lesson helped the pupils to build their confidence in using scissors. I have few kids who do not want to use scissors simply because they are afraid. Convince them, encourage them. And please prepare extra glue for yourself! Coz your pupils will definitely come to you and ask for your help to glue it for them. Cherish the moments wisely. ^^

Phonic 17 : Phonemes /dʒ/ (j), /v/ (v), /w/ (w), /ks/ /gz/ (x) worksheet

Assalamualaikum and Hi!

As this lesson has been conducted, I would love to share with you guys the worksheet that I've created for these phonemes. 

In this lesson, teachers need to :

1. Teach the sounds of these alphabets with your own preferences (using song, jolly phonics etc).
2. Try to ask pupils to read the by blending the phonemes. Recall sounds of alphabets with the proper actions.
3. Read the words together with pupils. You can prepare picture cards too, but I prefer to draw on the whiteboard.
4. Then, distribute worksheet to pupils. Give instructions properly. Ask pupils to really find pictures associated with the given clues on that particular paper.

Assalamualaikum!

I've been arranging few simple worksheets for my Year 1 pupils. So, here's another one that I'm going to use for my upcoming lesson. This should be done the week before the holidays but I was involved with Netball competition, so yeah, have to drag this to the week after the holidays. 

Teacher just need to teach on the words related to the phonemes, and then, focused on the sounds. In this worksheet, pupils need to listen and circle the correct words based on pictures as their main guidance. Click the image below to download!

Phonic 15 : Phonemes /i/, /m/, /n/, /d/ worksheet

Assalamualaikum! Happy New Year, Happy Lunar New Year!

I'm back with a new post related to phonics for Year 1. I've been facing some trouble in finding worksheets related to the phonemes that I supposed to teach for my Year 1. So, I've decided to create some which are still in my capability and my time since its holidays! For this worksheet, I've edited some of it and compiled few from the internet into this one below. Since it is hard to search and download related worksheet for all four phonemes per day, so compiling it will be a better idea.

For CUT AND PASTE part, I simply draw the pictures with its words, and focused on the phonemes m and n with red marker. Then, the pupils write the letters on the pictures and cut and paste it afterwards.

Phonic 14 : Phonic Mat (A to Z)

Phonemic Awareness

Assalamualaikum and Hi! This is a special post, as it is a new innovation that I've made. Basically, the idea of creating Phonic Mat came from the Twister Game. It has plenty of colourful circles on a mat. So, to make it fun, I invented it into a Phonic Mat. I edited it and put letters A to Z on it. Later, I printed it in large size (5x6 and 5x9) to be played by the pupils.

A programme was held to launch and use this Phonic Mat. I am so glad that the pupils were able to use and utilise it fully. For me, it has plenty of uses which depends on how the teachers use it. I can say that this Phonic Mat not only helps in terms of Phonemes, but also colours, directions, counting and more. You just have to be creative in using it. 

I have been asked of why I did not make these Phonic Mats in one go? Well, initially it should be used separately which depends on the lesson of letters per day. As we all know, pupils have limited and short term memory in terms of learning new things. However, using this Phonic Mat on the last day of the programme (learning phonemes A to Z) helped them to remember better.

Phonic 11 : Phonemes (oy, ir, ue, aw) - Listening and Reading Year 2 CEFR

Lesson 5 : Listening and Reading (New Syllabus)

Assalamualaikum people!

I've spent my weekends doing these one week worksheets for phonic lessons since I can't cope well with writing on the whiteboard thrice for three classes that I have per day. So, I create simple worksheets for the pupils so that they have fun in learning phonics. Besides, I used related gestures which allowed them to remember more on the sounds of the phonemes as shown in the video below. This video was taken last week for our first, second, third and forth phonic lessons (8 phonemes : ear, air, ure, er, ay, ou, ie, ea).

For today's lesson, I made this simple worksheet which involved listening and reading. The pupils need to identify correct pictures to be matched with the correct words. The teacher could simply give instructions to start with any words so that the pupils will listen and read the words while finding the correct pictures.

Phonic 10 : Phonic Book (phonemes 'ck' /k/ and /e/)

Lesson : Phonemic Awareness
Topic : Things Around Us
Year : 1

This was a pretty simple activity for my Year 1 students. I provided the words on the whiteboard and the students just need to named it according to the pictures they pasted on the phonic book template. This activity is done in groups. Before they started doing this, I recall their readings on the words and its meaning. 

To begin with the activity, group them first. Then, distribute the phonic book template and an envelope contains with the pictures as in the files uploaded below :
