Phonic 10 : Phonic Book (phonemes 'ck' /k/ and /e/)

Lesson : Phonemic Awareness
Topic : Things Around Us
Year : 1

This was a pretty simple activity for my Year 1 students. I provided the words on the whiteboard and the students just need to named it according to the pictures they pasted on the phonic book template. This activity is done in groups. Before they started doing this, I recall their readings on the words and its meaning.

To begin with the activity, group them first. Then, distribute the phonic book template and an envelope contains with the pictures as in the files uploaded below :

I also uploaded a file of additional activity for these phonemes :

To end this post, I showed you the activity conducted in my classroom.
Thanks for reading! :)

P/S : Please prepare extra glue for this activity! Good luck!

LA 15 : Ocean in A Bottle

Lesson : Language Arts
Year : 3
Topic : From The Sea

This is what I did with my Year 3 students yesterday. Its a simple activity with quite small budget because all the things needed are in your house! Check this out!

What Do You Need?

  • Empty bottles (any bottles, I used three boxes of mineral water bottle to cater my 37 students in this class)
  • Food colouring or Watercolour (we used blue for the ocean)
  • Sugar paper or foam papers (as in the photos above). You can also buy any sea creatures toys at the supermarket. I bought this about RM1.90 per roll from KK. Sadly, the thickness of this sugar paper decreased, not as thick as it used to be. :(
  • Brand new cooking oil or mineral oil
  • Scissors
How To Make It?

  • Fill the empty bottles with water (half of the bottle would be fine).
  • Put some blue colour in it to match with the colour of the ocean and put it aside.
  • Cut the sugar papers into sea creatures that you want. Use different colour for different sea creatures. (as in the photo above).
  • Put the 'sea creatures' into the ocean bottle.
  • Pour ample cooking oil so that when you shake it, you'll see bubbles and the 'sea creatures' are swimming through it!
  • Done!
Initially, I cut the sugar papers into square sizes to give them equally to each groups. I conducted this activity in groups of three but my students wanted more bottles to make it individually. So, I gave them more bottles, but they need to share the given sugar papers in the first place. They agreed and we continued making it more!

Some students might complaint that their ocean colour is not that blue. Well, I immediately said that our ocean here is very clear too, but it still the ocean though! Thank God, they are okay with it. Since this activity is an unplanned one for the students, they did not bring their own scissors, so teachers need to prepare with scissors too.

Overall, the students have the freedom to create the sea creatures with different colour logically and some random colours for certain sea creatures. I drew the sea creatures on the whiteboard so that they are able to copy the drawings on the sugar papers.

Since I did not bring enough cooking oil, I asked them to ask from their mom at home, but not too much. Ample to make bubbles when they shake the bottle as the price of cooking oil nowadays is pretty expensive. Well, that's it.

That's all for the class! Thanks for reading! :)

Phonic 9 : Story on the Wall (Phoneme /k/)

Lesson : Phonemic Awareness/Reading
Year : 1
Topic : What Should I Wear?

This is a very simple lesson and the idea is basically taken from Teacher Dilla's lesson. I adapted the way the pupils wrote the words associated with phoneme /k/. Instead of using spelling sheet, I asked them to write it on their own exercise book because I faced some problems with my computer for few days, but thankfully, its okay now.

The story written is not related to anyone whether they are alive or dead. Its just a very simple story with proper words associated with phoneme /k/. I hate the fact that the topic itself did not help much in introducing words with phoneme /k/, so this story is definitely not related to clothes etc. I drew and coloured the pictures myself as I faced problems with my laptop where I can't even browse for internet. So, let's take a look..

I chose the name Caspian because I love Prince Caspian from the movie Narnia. hahaha..

Yessss I know... That's an ugly kid anyway

So... the pupils need to copy the template below in their exercise book and walk around the class to read the story. Through that reading, they need to list down the words started with phoneme /k/. The words that I taught them are : KING, CAR, CAT, KID, CAP, KITES, KIT, KEY, CAN, CUP and KETTLE. Let's see what happened...

As I checked one of their books, I found a new word that I did not teach them but happen to be associated with phoneme /k/ : CASPIAN.

Anyway, it was a good activity to allow them to read and write while walking as kids do not stay at the same place for a long time especially YEAR 1 KIDS! During this activity, I saw that some excellent pupils helped out their weak friends and guide them on how to choose the correct words from the text. Thank you kids! ^^

Thanks for reading! :)
