Assalamualaikum and Hi!

Today, we started our class by discussing about the conjunction 'and'. To cooperate well with the topic, I asked beforehand from my pupils to bring their own pet toy. So, here they are! These are only for the first class that I entered. I forgot to take more photos from the other two classes as I was busy managing them. 

After that, we used the toys and relate it to the use of 'and', where the pupils able to understand it quite well. Then, I asked them to complete a worksheet where they needed to rewrite and replace the symbol '+' into 'and'. Its a pretty simple task since I don't intended to burden them with complexity of grammar itself. Done! You may download the worksheet below :

Grammar 7 : Singular and Plural (Stamp It Arts)

Assalamualaikum and Hi!

In today's lesson, we learnt about singular and plural. I taught them a song that I composed earlier today with the tune of Kebunku song which randomly popped up when I wrote the lyrics. So, here's the lyrics :

SINGULAR AND PLURAL SONG

Singular is for one,

A bag, an orange,

No need to put the 's',

Just leave it there.

Plural is for many,

Two bags, two oranges,

We need to put the 's',

Just add it there.

So, explain about the rules, where for singular, they need to focus on the 'a' and 'an', while for plural, focus more on the 's'. From here, I asked my pupils to draw two lines on their exercise books, to form a table. Then, using colourful stamp pads, they needed to stamp their thumbs and later continue to draw respective singular and plural nouns given. I bought this three colours stamp pads at Mr. DIY (Imago Kota Kinabalu) with the cost of RM9.50 each. These only available in three colours like these. Its quite expensive but its fun to be used!

 

Basically, this topic is about pets, but some of my pupils have the tendency to draw something else from previous topic such as bags, and some of them also drew fried chicken. Let's have a look!

After all that I've done, I still got some pupils who felt bored with my English class and I can't do anything about this. Just trying my best to keep going each day. That's all! Thanks for reading! :)

Education.com : Write a Silly Dinosaur Poem (Grammar)

Hello there! Its another new post but this time, its a very special one. I've got an email from Education.com who would like to collaborate their content as a guest in my blog. So, its kind of surprising for me, but yes, I've accepted it. So, here we are! (I made slight changes on the activities to suit the students' need here.) The photo displayed above showed on the outcomes of this activity which being given from Education.com. Since my students still have limited knowledge in terms of vocabulary, I will ask them to draw their version of dinosaur first using their own imagination. This is because we have limited access on the internet and also books as our resources.

WHAT YOU NEED :

• A4 Paper
• Pencil
• Colored pencils

HOW TO DO IT :

1. Give A4 paper and fold it into two to make it in a size of A5. The teacher introduces the activity to make a poem book with a proper sample and explanation. 

2. Then, let the pupils decide which type of dinosaur that they want to be use as the main character. Let them use their imagination in drawing a dinosaur and give the dinosaur a name.

3. Encourage the pupils to decide on a humorous situation for her character. Personifying a dinosaur and having it involved in activities that people usually do can be quite funny. (example : big eyes, small mouth and so on).

4. The teacher showed a sample of her own silly dinosaur on the whiteboard.

5. Create a list of interesting words (adjectives) to use in the poem and ask the pupils to keep track of all the words written on the whiteboard.

6. Now, brainstorm with them and try to find a rhyming twin for several of the vocabulary words based on the sample given by the teacher.

7. Pupils can begin by creating two sentences that introduce the poem. The last word of the second sentence should rhyme with the last word of the first sentence.

8. Continue the rhyming pattern until they have created three pairs of rhyming sentences that describe their funny dinosaur situation.

9. Write the entire poem neatly on a given A4 paper.

10. The pupils can attach the drawing to the poem with a staple or cut out the drawing and glue it to the second page of the poem book. They can also draw the dinosaur on the given A4 paper.

Grammar 6 : Verbs and DIY Whiteboard

I've been too busy with netball these few months and I forgot on updating about my lessons here. Well, its not that always that I adapted my own lesson, and sometimes I got the ideas from the internet too. Okay, my pupils are weak at grammar. Teaching them to understand it and use it always a tiring one. There are days that I wondered and thinking on how to teach them grammar in a way that they know how to use it well.

Plus, my pupils are unable to create proper simple sentences. I believed that they are afraid to make mistakes and they do not know the words in English. Then, I realised that I should try to trigger them in making sentences through a competition among themselves. So, here's what I did for the lesson.

First lesson :
1. Using Charade game as the introduction as verbs are verbs. So, it is easy to act on it.

2. Prepare word cards with meanings at the back of it. I used 135gsm drawing block papers and manually write the words because I was too lazy to type and print and cut. Then, distribute the word cards to the pupils individually. Make sure all of them have one verb.

3. Allow them to think to create ONE simple sentence from the verb that they got. They may ask questions about other words that they do not know. Few of them love to use dictionary, which is good.

4. I checked their works and I was slightly disappointed because they can't properly make a simple sentence.

Due to that, I decided to prepare a better lesson for them, to trigger them to make sentences in the next lesson.

Second lesson :

I prepared a 'DIY Whiteboard' which made up of laminated papers for them to use and write on it. I also prepared markers individually for them. But, this time, I grouped them into pairs and they shared the whiteboards and markers (because I did not make enough, my bad).

There are about 10 pairs (I have 37 pupils in this class), I just gave them a verb. The pairs are given about 2 minutes to discuss and write a simple sentence on their DIY Whiteboard. Then, they need to write it on the real whiteboard in front of the class. Then, we discussed it and pupils copied the sentences on their exercise books.

Guess what?? They did pretty well as compared to the individual ones. I concluded that they need something more than just exercise books, something that they can used in a fun way.  

So far, I believed that they know they can. Its just the matter of want to do, or not. Always believe in your pupils. If the pupils still weak in this, just ask them to meet you in the staff room during recess, teach them one-to-one. They'll get it.

Grammar 5 : Adverb Cards

Year : 4

In this lesson, I taught the students the concept of adverb, what is adverb and when to use it. Then, I introduced them with a set of adverb activity cards (which I got from the internet) and played these cards in groups. The students need to guess the activities and adverb acted by the respective member to win this game. Teachers guide the students as they might not know the words displayed on the cards given.

A sample of these cards is as follows (yellow is for the activities, purple is for the adverbs) :

In simple words, play this game just like a charade game. The students will enjoy it without even realised that they are learning adverbs indirectly!

Grammar 4 : Demonstrative Pronouns

In this lesson, I also used song to teach them grammar. But, this time, it is an action song that I got from the internet. I found a video related to demonstrative pronouns song conducted in a lesson by a teacher. Check out the video below :

This song that I used in this grammar lesson allowed my students to understand the differences between this, these, that and those. After that, I tested them about the content of demonstrative pronouns through a video from a movie entitled The Ant Bully (below), to see whether they were able to recognise the elements in demonstrative pronouns.

As a result, my students were able to complete the worksheets given with good understanding of the concept of demonstrative pronouns. The materials for this lesson are provided in the link below :

Grammar 3 : Possessive Pronouns

Year : 3

To teach possessive pronouns, this time, I used a game. It was called as 'Throw Me In'. Why? Because basically, this game needed the player (students) to throw the correct possessive pronouns and pronouns balls into the correct paper bags (either pronouns or possessive pronouns). The sample of the things are as follows :

So, before the game started, we have to explain the rules and ensure that they truly understand it. I also showed them this video clip (a song actually about possessive pronouns).

From feedback, the students enjoyed it and able to finish their worksheet completely with correct answers. The worksheet is uploaded below :

Grammar 2 : Reflexive Pronouns Song

Year : 5

For reflexive pronouns, I also created a song based on the tune of "Do A Deer" song. FYI, I managed to find this instrumental version of this song. So, if you don't like it, maybe you can find another good instrumental version of this song to sing it with your students. :)

Since I did not printed it in poster size before, I only gave each of my students the lyrics to be pasted in their exercise book. Reflexive pronouns consists of changes from pronouns to reflexive ones (she turns into herself). The lyric is as follows :

Come on let’s learn,

Reflexive Pronouns,

Shows the person who acts.

I the name become myself,

You now turn into yourself,

He now turns into himself,

She now turns into herself,

It now turn into itself,

That’s just some of it to know oh oh.

Grammar 1 : Pronouns Song

Grammar is one of the hardest part to be teach, to be explain and to be understand. So, I think, by using songs, I could help the students to at least remember them properly. 

Thus, I created this song entitled Pronouns Song. I used this for my Year 3 students last year when I was in my practicum 3. The sample of lyric is as follow :
