Phonic 6 : Phonemes /s/ and /ae/

Lesson : Phonemic Awareness
Year : 1

In this lesson, I taught them to sing the song based on Are You Sleeping, Brother John? tune. The lyric is as follows :

Phoneme /s/

Sea and sailors, sea and sailors,
/s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/,
/s/ is the sound of S,
/s/ is the sound of S,
/s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/, /s/.

Phoneme /ae/

Apple and ants, apple and ants.
/ae/, /ae/, /ae/, /ae/, /ae/, /ae/,
/ae/ is the sound of A,
/ae/ is the sound of A,
/ae/, /ae/, /ae/, /ae/, /ae/, /ae/.

For reinforcement activity, I taught them to make a simple book. The template of this letters sounds book is taken from ITSY BITSY BOOK. Just simply download the template and used them. The instructions on how to make this book also stated in the given link above. My kids were very happy when they succeed in making their own book!

The samples are as follow :

For enjoyment, show and pretend to your kids that you are making magic by making a book without using any stapler and cellophane tape! They'll be curious to do one too. Ensure that they coloured it well by making your own beautiful samples as their guide. Since they saw I coloured my book using magic pens (small marker pens coz that's the only colour that I have with me for now), they also bought one. So, they have extra colours now. :D

Anyway, always be patient and be more creative in teaching phonemes so that they could remember the sounds better.

Good luck! :)
