L & S 11 : Paper Plate Clock

Its 2017! I'm back to update my blog after few months of break due to busyness of my work at the end of last year. So, this year, I might be busy too, even busier than last year, but I'll try my best to cope with this one. Pray the best for me. :)

So, let's begin!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lesson : Listening and Speaking
Year : 3
Topic : Things I Do

My Paper Plate Clock

In yesterday's lesson, I taught the students about things that they do in the morning, afternoon, and evening. I asked them about it based on the pictures in the textbook and they responded well (fyi, I teach the second class of Year 3 this year). After that, I taught them about how to say the words of one o'clock and so on using the textbook.

To develop their interest in learning this, I brought 'a huggy bear clock' where I bought it at a supermarket with the cost of RM12.60. It is a really useful thing to be used for the students to learn about numbers and clock since the hour hand and minute hand are working! (It can be turn manually just like the paper plate clock that we were about to create afterwards).

The Huggy Bear Clock

Then, I started ask the students about the time through the Huggy Bear Clock and all of them area able to say it out correctly. They slightly have problem when I put the hour and minute hand at the 12 but eventually I taught them how to read that time at the clock.

To make the activity becomes even fun, I prepared them materials to make the clock out of paper plate.

What do you need?

  • Paper plate (I have 34 students so I prepared 40 for them in case some of them ruined it or suddenly the number of your students increased more than the list in the APDM haha)
  • Butang Katup (Snap fastener). If you could get the brass fastener, this is the best one to be used. You can also used the plastic fastener (just like the pink colour thing in the photo above). *I've try my best to look for one but I can't find one.
  • Colour paper for the hour and minute hands. If you used the brass fastener, you can use thick paper for the hour and minute hands. If not, just use the typical 80 gsm colour paper.
  • Scissors
  • Markers or colour pens.
How to do it?
  1. Prepare a paper plate.
  2. Ask the students to make a small hole in the middle of the paper plate.
  3. Ask the students to write the numbers properly (12 must be inline with 6, and so on).
  4. Cut the colour paper for the hour and minute hands (make sure the hour hand is short and minute hand is longer).
  5. Ask the students to make holes at the hour and minute hands.
  6. Give them the snap fastener and snap together all of the prepared materials.
  7. Ask them to write their names at the back of the 'clock'.
  8. The end!
Try it and change it according to your creativity, okay? Here are my students' works but I can't put all of the plates in rows since there are 34 of them!

See the stack of plates!

Anyway, I will continue this activity by playing the "What time is it, Mr Tiger?" game since I only have few masks and one of them is the tiger. Haha. I'll update about it in the Reading Section in this blog after I have conducted the lesson.

Thanks for reading! ^^
