LA 12 : DIY Airplanes

Lesson : Language Arts
Year : 3

For this lesson, I only asked my students to bring empty bottles, cellophane tape and scissors. Luckily, they brought it and we were able to work on this activity!

This activity is taken from THIS BLOG which I have adapted it a little bit. But, basically the ideas and templates given are from the source stated above.

What do you need?

  • White papers (to wrap the body of the bottle)
  • Colour papers (for the airplane parts template)
  • Empty bottles with caps
  • Markers (for decorating purposes)
  • Scissors
  • Cellophane tape or Double sided tape
  • Glue
How to make it?
  1. Use one A4 white paper and wrap the body of the bottle.
  2. Cut the airplane parts carefully (especially the propeller).
  3. Help the students to cut the inner part of the propeller and slide it onto the bottle's neck. Ensure that the propeller fits well and close the cap of the bottle back. To make it spin, just simply adjust the tightness of the cap.
  4. Then, continue with other parts of the airplane such as wings, horizontal fin (the small parts) and dorsal fin (the medium parts).
  5. Give the students extra papers for the engine parts as it is not given in the template.
  6. Use more creativity in decorating the airplane such as drawing the pilot, windshields or you can also let the students decorate the body of their airplanes too!
  7. My students have difficulties in drawing the pilot's picture, thus they write their names on that airplane part.
  8. You can also make a hole at the center of the bottles for money box purposes.
  9. Have a good try! *check out the source of this activity for more details.
Since I forgot to bring white papers the other day, I only able to give the students colour papers for the body of their airplanes. So, here are the photos of the activity :

While doing this activity, the class was very silent as everyone was too focus to finish this. Some of them even delayed their recess time just to finish this and wanted to take it with them during recess. Well, overall, I'm glad that they were able to make one! The airplane template is uploaded below :

Thanks for reading!
