Phonic 5 : Letter Box Activity (phonemes 'ew' and 'oe')

Lesson : Phonemic Awareness
Year : 2

In this lesson, I introduced the students with these phonemes first. Then, I started to divide them into groups and play the letter box activity.

What do you need?
Word cards (check the file uploaded below), a small box (to fill in the word cards), two tissue boxes (one for each phoneme)

How to do it?

  1. The students will draw lots word cards from the small box.
  2. The students say out the words that they got and put them into a phoneme box prepared (depends on what word they got, either with phoneme 'ew' or 'oe').
  3. The activity is continued until all students finish to draw lots.
  4. While waiting, the students will be given time to copy the words that they have learnt based on these two phonemes.
*Enrichment Activity (Writing Words Activity) :

  1. Prepare few laminated papers (I prepared 10 papers) and 10 whiteboard markers.
  2. Divide the students into groups (depends on your number of students).
  3. Start the 'Writing Words' Activity.
  4. The teacher will say out the words (based on phonemes learnt) and the groups need to write the words on the laminated paper correctly.
  5. If they got it wrong, marks will not be given.
  6. Make sure the students were able to say out the words too. (for bonus marks).
  7. Done!

Word cards file is uploaded below :
